The Spirit Does Not Just Fight the Flesh, He Displaces It

Pastor Alan teaches that spiritual freedom is less about white-knuckling your way out and more about what takes the place of the old desire.

Anyone who has tried to quit something knows the trap. You white-knuckle it for three days. You clear out the house. You tell yourself no a hundred times. Then you are tired on day four, and the empty space is louder than the rules.

In his message Breaking Covenants, from Jeremiah 31:31-34, Pastor Alan gave the church a better picture of how freedom works. It is not only about pushing something out. It is about what moves in.

1. The old way depended on you

Pastor Alan walked through a pattern in Scripture. Adam and Eve broke their covenant. Israel broke it through idolatry and disobedience. The Old Covenant was written on stone, and people could not keep it. He pointed to the “seed of sin” that made perfect keeping impossible.

If your plan for spiritual victory is to try harder, you are standing where Israel stood.

2. The New Covenant is written on the heart

God promised something different through Jeremiah: “I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts” (Jeremiah 31:33). Jesus sealed it. At the table He said, “this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28). Hebrews 8:6 calls it a better covenant, established on better promises.

Pastor Alan’s big idea for the message was this: “The New Covenant doesn’t just reconcile you to God – it gives you power to break every other covenant you’ve ever made.” Grace is not only a pardon. It is power.

3. Two forces cannot share one space

Here is the teaching people remember. Pastor Alan called it the Law of Displacement, and explained it simply. One force displaces another by pushing with equal force, causing one to take the place of the other. Forces that oppose each other cannot exist in the same space. His example was a magnet: one flips and takes the space of the one opposing it.

Then he tied it to Scripture. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” In his words, “The Spirit works like a law of displacement… He introduces new, holy desires to displace the old desires.”

4. Notice the verb

Paul says walk. He does not say wrestle. Walking is ordinary, daily, one step after another. The Spirit’s work is not mainly to make you strong enough to resist your old appetites for the rest of your life. It is to give you new ones.

That is how real change often looks from the inside. You do not notice a battle won. One day you notice you did not want it. A habit you used to feed has no pull. Something else has taken that room.

5. Truth keeps the room occupied

Displacement is not a one-time event. Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Pastor Alan taught that renewing the mind means “replacing your participation in forming the stronghold’s foundation with biblical truth.” If you clear out a lie and put nothing in its place, the lie comes back to an empty room.

So the practical question is not only what you are quitting. It is what you are putting there instead. Prayer at the time you used to scroll. A walk with a friend where you used to isolate. A chapter of Scripture where the old thought used to run.

A word of caution

Not every struggle is simply a matter of filling a gap. Some habits and compulsions have physical and emotional roots, and a doctor or a qualified professional can help alongside your faith. Pastor Alan’s teaching does not rule that out. It tells you where the real power comes from.

What to do this week

Pick one old desire. Write down the exact time of day it hits. Decide ahead of time what will occupy that moment, and make it something that draws you toward God. Read Galatians 5:16-25 once, slowly. Then take the walk, one step at a time.

If you are in White House, Tennessee and would rather not face this alone, Today’s Victory Church meets Sundays at 3 p.m. and for Bible study Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. You do not have to have it figured out to walk in.
