Egypt Is Still in the Room

Old wounds can follow you out of a hard past and into your marriage, and Scripture shows how a renewed mind sets you free.

You say something to your spouse, and you hear it as it leaves your mouth. The tone is not yours. It belongs to someone from years ago. A parent. An ex. A boss. Somebody who made you flinch, and now you are passing the flinch along.

Nobody invited that person to dinner. But there they are.

Free on the outside, bound on the inside

In his message The Crossroads, Pastor Alan said of Israel, “Israel left Egypt in one night, But Egypt remained in their minds for years.” Then he said, “Many people are Free Physically but Bound Mentally.” And he added, “A Wrong Mindset can keep you Imprisoned even when God has Opened the door for you.”

Read that slowly. The door was open. The Israelites walked through it. And the old place still ran their thinking.

Numbers 11:5 shows how strong it was. The people remembered the fish they ate in Egypt, and the cucumbers, melons, leeks, and onions. They remembered the menu. They had stopped remembering the whip. The mind edits, and not always in your favor.

What Egypt looks like at home

For some, it is a house they grew up in where nobody said sorry. So now apologizing feels like losing. For others, it is a previous marriage, and every late text from a spouse now sounds like the old betrayal. Or it is a habit of going quiet, because speaking up once cost too much.

Pastor Alan’s notes tie wrong thinking to its fruit. Fear produces paralysis. Negativity produces discouragement. Romans 8:5-6 says those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, and those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. His observation was that Paul did not say minds drift there. He said they set them.

That is both sobering and hopeful. What was set can be reset.

Remember what God has done

The Crossroads begins with Israel’s history. God brought them out of Egypt, sustained them in the wilderness, and provided food, water, and direction. From that, the notes say, “God’s Past Faithfulness is a Foundation for Today’s Faith.” And this one: “When you remember what God has done, it becomes easier to trust Him for what He is about to do.”

Psalm 103:2 says, “Forget not all His benefits.” Try it as an exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down three times God carried the two of you through something. A job loss. A diagnosis. A year you did not think you would survive. Put it somewhere you will see it on a bad night.

If you are on your own, write down three times God carried you. The principle does not change. The past you remember on purpose will beat the past that ambushes you.

You can choose how you think about it

Pastor Alan said, “You cannot always choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you think about it.” That is not a command to pretend. It is an invitation to take a thought and examine it before it drives.

Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” His notes say, “A Renewed Mind creates a Transformed Life.”

Here is a small way to practice. When the old reaction fires, stop and name it, if only to yourself. “That was Egypt talking, not my spouse.” Then choose what to say. Deuteronomy 30:19 sets it plainly: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life.”

If Egypt is something you left

Maybe you are divorced, and you are afraid of carrying the last marriage into the next relationship. Naming it is half the work. Maybe you are single and you notice the old patterns showing up in friendships. The same renewing applies. And maybe you are married to someone who does not share your faith, and you are tempted to read every silence as rejection. Hold the thought up to Scripture before you act on it.

If what you carry is not a memory but a present danger, if someone in your home hurts or controls you, that is a safety problem. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

We meet Sundays at 3pm in White House, Tennessee, and Thursday Bible Study is at 6:30pm. Come with whatever followed you in.
