When Your Strength Is Gone, Grace Is Not

Paul asked God to remove what hurt him and heard that grace was enough, which gives permission to be weak without being ashamed.

There is a kind of tired that sleep does not touch. You get through the funeral, the casseroles, the paperwork, the phone calls. Then the quiet comes, and you find out you have nothing left.

If that is you, there is a man in the Bible who knew that kind of empty.

I. Paul Asked, and the Pain Stayed

In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul describes a thorn in the flesh. He does not tell us exactly what it was. He tells us what he did with it. He pleaded with the Lord three times that it might leave him.

Notice that. The apostle begged, and the answer was not what he asked for. Scripture does not hide that from us. If you have prayed hard and the pain did not lift, you have not found a hole in your faith. You have found yourself in 2 Corinthians 12.

II. The Answer He Got

In his teaching series on spiritual covenants, in the message Breaking Covenants, Pastor Alan’s notes come to this very passage: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” His notes add that in context Paul is talking about his thorn, and that the weakness caused him to rely on Christ all the more.

Read that slowly. God did not say, “I will take it away by Friday.” He said, “My grace is sufficient for you.” It is a different answer, and for many people in grief it turns out to be the one they actually needed.

Verse 10 follows: “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Pastor Alan’s notes put it this way: “weakness produces strength through Christ.” That strength is not yours to manufacture. It is given to you in the place where yours ran out.

III. Grace Is Bigger Than Where You Are Standing

That same message looks at how grace works across the whole Bible. Romans 5:20-21 says that “where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” Pastor Alan’s notes describe grace as “a reigning power.” Ephesians 1:7 speaks of “the riches of His grace.”

None of those verses are about grief directly, and we should not twist them to say they are. But they tell you what kind of thing grace is. It is not a thin comfort. It reigns. It does not run out when you do.

IV. Why This Is Permission

Many grieving people carry a second weight on top of the first one. They think they should be handling it better. They think strong Christians do not fall apart in a grocery store parking lot.

Paul did not say, “I got stronger and then God showed up.” He said that in his weakness the power of Christ rested on him. The weak place is where the power lands. If you are crying in the car, you are not outside that promise. You are the person it was written for.

You do not need a tidy explanation to receive grace. You do not need to feel grateful, or to feel anything. Grace does not wait for your mood to improve.

V. Receiving It Is Practical

This can sound lofty, so here is what it looks like on an ordinary Tuesday.

You skip the thing you cannot face and you do not call it failure. You let someone else make dinner. You pray one honest sentence: “Lord, I have nothing today. Be enough.” That is not giving up. It is exactly what Paul learned to do.

If you are the friend of someone grieving, do not tell them to be strong. Tell them they do not have to be. Carry something for them.

VI. This Week

Write 2 Corinthians 12:9 on a card and put it where you will see it when the day gets hard. Say it when you cannot say anything else. Let it be true on the days you do not feel it.
