Remember the Wilderness: Faith for a Tight Season

When scarcity is your loudest story, Scripture says to remember how you were carried before, and to leave Egypt behind in your head.

Tight seasons make a person rewrite their own history. Every past hardship rises up, every failure gets replayed, and the story becomes that things have always been like this and always will. If that has been your inner monologue, there is another way to read the same years.

Start at the crossroads

In his message The Crossroads, Pastor Alan opened with the picture in Deuteronomy 30:19, where God sets before His people a choice. Before they got to the crossroads, he said, look at what God had already done. “He brought them out of Egypt. He sustained them in the wilderness. He protected them for forty years. He provided food, water, and directions.”

His notes make a simple claim: “God’s Past Faithfulness is a Foundation for Today’s Faith.” And a second one that is worth writing on a card: “When you remember what God has done, it becomes easier to trust Him for what He is about to do.”

Do the remembering on paper

Moses told Israel to do this on purpose. “And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness” (Deuteronomy 8:2, NKJV). A few verses later he adds, “Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years” (Deuteronomy 8:4, NKJV).

The people had been through a hard stretch, and Moses did not say it had been easy. He said look back and count what carried you.

Try it this week. Take one page and list the times you came through something. A job that ended and one that started. A bill that got paid in a way you did not see coming. A friend who showed up. A season you thought would break you, and did not. You are not building a case that God owes you a certain outcome. You are building a record that He has been present before, so you can believe He is present now.

Egypt in the mind

Pastor Alan made a point that stings in the right way. “Israel left Egypt in one night, But Egypt remained in their minds for years.” He added, “Many people are Free Physically but Bound Mentally.”

Even after the door opened, the people kept looking back. In Numbers 11:5 they said, “We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt.” They remembered the menu and forgot the chains. A bad money season can do the same thing to you from the other direction. You can walk out of a debt, a job, or a crisis and still carry its voice into every decision.

Maybe it says there will never be enough. Maybe it says to grab and hoard, or to spend now because tomorrow is not guaranteed. That is Egypt talking. Romans 8:5-6 says the people who set their minds on the flesh get death, and those who set their minds on the Spirit get life and peace. Paul does not say minds drift there. He says they set them. Pastor Alan stressed that very point.

The battle you cannot see

“The greatest battles you fight are not around you; they are within you.” That is another of his lines. Another one is, “Sometimes the battle is won or lost before it is ever seen.”

It means the first fight in a tight season is not with the creditor. It is with the story you tell yourself at two in the morning. Replace it on purpose with something true and remembered. God led you before. He is the same God now. You are allowed to take the next practical step while you remember that.

What to do with this

Keep your list of what God has carried you through where you will see it. Read it before you open the statements. Then do the practical work in front of you, whether that is a budget, a call to a lender, or a conversation with someone you trust. Remembering is not a replacement for any of that. It is the ground you stand on while you do it.

Remembering also does not mean this season will end on your timeline. It means you are not walking it alone, and you have a history with God that you can lean on.
