What to Do When Money Is Keeping You Up at Night

Debt and tight months bring shame that math alone cannot explain, so here is an honest way to face the number this week.

You check the balance before you check anything else. Your stomach knows the number before your eyes do. If that is your week, this is for you.

Money is a spiritual issue before it is a math issue

Here is the hard part first. Some of the number in front of you is not your fault, and some of it may be. A medical bill, a layoff, a car that died. Also a purchase that felt fine at the time. Both can be true at once.

If money were only math, you would feel only numbers. Instead you feel shame, dread, anger at someone, and a quiet fear that you are failing at being an adult. Something deeper is being touched. That is why Scripture talks about money so often.

Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24, NKJV). Notice what He did not say. He did not say money is evil, or that being short of it means God is displeased with you. He said money can become a master. A master is whatever tells you what to do. When your whole day bends around a number, when you cannot sleep or think or be kind at dinner, that number is acting like a master.

Debt takes choices away

“The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7, NKJV). That is not a judgment. It is a description, and anyone with a monthly minimum payment knows it is accurate. Debt says no for you, to the job you might have taken or the rest you needed.

Romans 6:16 says you are a slave to whatever you obey. Pastor Alan teaches that a covenant is a binding agreement, and that we make them without noticing: with habits, with thought patterns, with people. A loan is an agreement. So is spending to feel better after a hard day. The New Covenant, he says, gives you power to break the agreements that have a hold on you. That does not mean the balance vanishes. It means you stop being owned by it while you pay it down.

Your future is shaped by choices

As Pastor Alan put it, “Your Future is not Determined by Chance. It is Shaped by Choices.” He preached from Deuteronomy 30:19, where God sets life and death, blessing and cursing, before His people and says, choose. You may not have chosen the layoff. You can still choose what you do this week.

He also said, “You cannot always choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you think about it.” It is not a reason to ignore the bill. Romans 8:6 says to be spiritually minded is life and peace. And as Pastor Alan put it, “Peace is not the Absence of Problems; it is the Presence of a God-Governed Mind Set.”

What to do on Tuesday

Open the statements. All of them. Write every amount, every interest rate, and every due date on one sheet of paper. This is the hardest step, because the fear lives in what you have not looked at. Once it is on paper, it has edges, and a problem with edges can be worked.

Jesus said in Luke 14:28 that a person building a tower sits down first and counts the cost. A written list is exactly that.

Then call the people you owe before they call you. Creditors, hospitals, and landlords often have hardship options, but they rarely offer them to someone who has gone quiet.

If you can, tell one safe person the real number. This is not your boss, and it need not be your spouse. Shame survives in secret. Said out loud, it usually loses some of its weight.

Giving, and what it does not do

Some of you are wondering where giving fits when you are this tight. Here is the straight answer. Giving is not a way to buy your way out of debt. Nobody should tell you a gift to a church will bring a raise or a cleared balance. That is a sales pitch,.

Nobody here should be pressured or measured by what they put in a plate, what they earn, or what they owe.

You are not your balance

Hebrews 13:5 says to be content with such things as you have, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” That is not a command to feel fine. It is a promise that you are not alone in the middle of the mess, and that your worth was never printed on the statement.

You will probably still be tight next month. But you can walk in knowing the real number, holding a list and a plan, under a Master you chose instead of one that chose you. If you want people around you for that, Today’s Victory Church meets Sundays at 3pm in White House, Tennessee, and Thursday Bible Study is at 6:30pm.
